Rep. Gary McDowell and Other Officials Attend Chippewa County Dems Fall Fest

Sault Sainte Marie, MI - September 20, 2005 - State Representative Gary McDowell and U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow's UP representative, Sheri Davie were among elected local, state and US officials attending the third annual Chippewa County Democrats Fall Festival last Saturday, at Sherman Park in Sault Sainte Marie.

Local party members joined Representative McDowell, Ms Davie, as well as Kay Chase, 1st Congressional District Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party, Dick Timmer, Chippewa County Commissioner, Jerry Dobbertin, Chippewa County Democratic Chair, and Hilary Edison, LSSU College Dems President, at a picnic cookout hosted by the Chippewa County Democratic Party.

Local Democrats shared their views and concerns with elected representatives regarding a variety of issues, including the economy, local environment, and the status of the Newberry Prison.

Representative McDowell pledged continued efforts against the importation of trash to Michigan, and explained a new legislative package soon to be introduced that protects Great Lakes water.

"The importation of trash into Michigan affects all residents. The people of northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula also understand the need to, and demand that we, protect our water," McDowell said. "Both of these issues should bring people together from both sides of the bridge and from all walks of life."

Representative McDowell also expressed optimism about the new state budget and the hope that it would result in few cuts to services, especially in health care services, education and the restoration of the budget for the Newberry prison.

Local Democrats enjoyed a variety of picnic fare; a perfect late summer Upper Peninsula day; the opportunity to talk informally with elected officials and meet with other Chippewa County Democrats.

The Chippewa County Democratic Party is the County affiliate of the Michigan Democratic Party. Meetings are held the last Saturday of every month at the Country Kitchen in Sault Sainte Marie. More information is available on their website: www.chippewadems.com
